IAEA deputy chief to visit Iran for cooperation talks, no inspections planned

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) deputy director general will visit Iran on Monday for talks on nuclear cooperation, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting, Araghchi said the visit aims to discuss a new framework for bilateral cooperation, in line with a law passed in late June by Iran’s parliament and Constitutional Council to suspend certain collaborations with the IAEA.

He clarified that the trip will not include any inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities, adding, “We have not yet reached a new agreement and the cooperation would not begin.”

Iran’s decision to scale back cooperation with the IAEA came in response to Israeli-US attacks on its nuclear facilities and the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists in June. Tehran has stated that it will maintain this stance until it receives assurances on the security of its nuclear sites and scientists.

According to Xinhua, Araghchi said Iran has already provided the IAEA with the necessary explanations regarding the new cooperation framework.

Separately, the semi-official Fars news agency reported that the visiting IAEA official is Massimo Aparo, the agency’s deputy director general and head of the Department of Safeguards. His trip is expected to focus solely on dialogue, with no monitoring activities scheduled.

The upcoming talks are seen as a potential step toward easing tensions between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog, though both sides have signaled that substantive changes to cooperation will depend on broader security guarantees and political agreements.
