Canada PM backs Ukraine’s sovereignty in call with Zelensky ahead of Trump-Putin summit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for Ukraine during a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky, stressing that any decision about Ukraine’s future must be made by Ukrainians themselves.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, both leaders agreed that international borders cannot be altered by force. Carney reiterated Canada’s backing for Kyiv and highlighted last week’s joint announcement by Canada, the European Union, and Britain to lower the price cap on Russian crude oil as part of ongoing pressure on Moscow.

The conversation came days before the planned meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15. The summit was announced by Trump last Friday, coinciding with his self-imposed deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face additional US sanctions.

Carney and Zelensky welcomed Washington’s diplomatic efforts to secure peace but underscored that Ukraine must be directly involved in any agreements. Zelensky warned that deals reached without Kyiv’s participation would amount to “dead decisions.”

Trump has said future discussions could include Zelensky, or even bring together both the Russian and Ukrainian presidents. A White House official indicated that the US president remains open to a trilateral meeting.

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker also told reporters that Zelensky’s attendance at the Alaska summit was still possible. The talks are expected to focus on finding a resolution to the ongoing war, which has entered its third year.
