Jordan, Syria, US discuss Sweida ceasefire and reconstruction efforts

Jordan on Tuesday hosted a high-level trilateral meeting with Syria and the United States to address the ongoing situation in Syria’s southern Sweida province, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry announced.

The talks brought together Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Syrian Foreign Affairs Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, and U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Turkey Thomas Barrack, along with officials from relevant institutions in all three countries.

Participants reaffirmed that Sweida is an integral part of Syria and stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights of its residents while working toward rebuilding a unified Syrian state with broad public participation.

The delegations agreed to meet again in the coming weeks to continue discussions and act on Syria’s request to establish a trilateral working group. The group’s aim would be to help consolidate the Sweida ceasefire and advance a lasting resolution to the crisis.

Jordan and the U.S. welcomed steps taken by Syrian authorities, including investigating recent ceasefire violations, cooperating with UN agencies, expanding humanitarian aid delivery, rehabilitating damaged infrastructure, facilitating the return of displaced people, and promoting civil peace.

Both countries also called for greater international engagement in Syria’s reconstruction, highlighting the need for coordinated global efforts to restore stability.

Tuesday’s meeting followed earlier discussions held in Amman on July 19, which focused on reinforcing the ceasefire in Sweida and pursuing a political solution to the region’s instability. Observers say the trilateral format marks a rare forum for direct U.S.-Syria engagement, albeit through Jordan’s mediation.
