Houthis claim drone strikes on four Israeli cities in Gaza war escalation
Yemen’s Houthi group says it has launched drone attacks on four Israeli cities — Haifa, Negev, Eilat, and Be’er Sheva — in its latest show of support for Palestinians amid the ongoing Gaza war.
According to a statement from Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea, broadcast on the group’s al-Masirah TV channel Tuesday, six drones were used in the operations, which he claimed “successfully achieved their objectives.”
Sarea said the attacks were a direct response to what he called Israel’s “plan to eliminate the Palestinian cause through genocide, starvation, and displacement.” He vowed that strikes against Israel would continue until the Gaza offensive ends and the blockade is lifted.
There was no immediate response from Israeli authorities regarding the claimed attacks. Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have launched dozens of missiles and drones toward Israel. Most have been intercepted or have failed to reach their targets. Israel has retaliated with strikes on Yemeni ports and infrastructure.
In a separate development, Yemeni government forces repelled a major Houthi offensive in southern Dhalea province on Saturday, killing three militants, according to a military official speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official said the Houthis used heavy artillery in an attempt to breach government defensive lines in the Bab Ghalaq area, triggering fierce fighting. The clash lasted about an hour before Houthi forces retreated to their positions, leaving government troops in control of the area.
Analysts say the Houthis’ ongoing attacks on Israel are part of a broader regional escalation, with the group using its arsenal to pressure Tel Aviv and bolster its image as a defender of the Palestinian cause.
