FIA Chicago marks Independence Day with cultural program, musical tribute, and historic reunion of two FIA groups
The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) – Chicago hosted its annual Independence Day celebration last week at The Matrix Club, Naperville, featuring cultural performances, a live music concert, and a symbolic show of unity between two FIA groups that have operated separately for 16 years.
The program began with the U.S. and Indian national anthems and remarks from FIA leaders, including Founder and Chairman Sunil Shah and President Anu Malhotra. Cultural performances included patriotic dances by Shekhar Dance Academy and Shelzar Dance Academy.
The event drew prominent guests, including Consul General of India in Chicago Somnath Ghosh, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, Schaumburg Mayor Tom Dailly, State Representative Michelle Mussman, and Alderwoman Shweta Baid of Aurora. Ghosh praised the Indian diaspora’s “deep commitment to both India and America,” while Krishnamoorthi emphasized the need to safeguard democracy. One of the evening’s notable moments was the appearance of Hemant Patel, president of another FIA group that split from FIA Chicago 16 years ago. Patel described the reunion as “two brothers meeting again” and urged collaboration between both organizations. Shah agreed, calling it a “joint celebration” and expressing hope for continued cooperation.
The cultural segment was followed by the presentation of community awards to contributors and sponsors.
The night concluded with a live performance by Bollywood composer and singer Jatin Pandit, joined by Raahul Jatin and other vocalists. The concert featured popular songs from Pandit’s career and drew enthusiastic audience participation.
The event ended with both FIA leaderships affirming their shared mission of serving the Indian American community and celebrating India’s independence. Patel invited Shah and Malhotra to upcoming FIA events later in August, signaling further opportunities for collaboration.
