Trump seeks trilateral summit with Putin and Zelensky as early as August 22

US President Donald Trump is pushing for a high-level trilateral summit involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with a possible date set as soon as August 22, according to US media reports.

The development comes shortly after Trump’s nearly three-hour meeting with Putin at Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska on August 15. Their talks included a one-on-one exchange inside Trump’s limousine, followed by a smaller group discussion. The Russian side was represented by Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while the US team included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Following the Alaska summit, Trump described the meeting as “very productive,” stressing that both sides focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict. Putin also confirmed that discussions were centered on peace negotiations.

Trump later held phone calls with Zelensky, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and other EU leaders, urging them to support a peace framework. Reports suggest that Trump proposed a deal under which Ukraine would cede the remaining Donbass territories to Russia in exchange for security guarantees for Kyiv and Europe, along with a ceasefire along current battle lines.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated that a trilateral summit could follow Zelensky’s scheduled meeting with Trump at the White House on Monday. However, Moscow has yet to officially confirm its participation.

The US president emphasized that if talks with Zelensky prove successful, he is prepared to arrange another meeting with Putin to advance peace negotiations. This push underscores Trump’s growing role as a broker in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
