Trump lashes out at Senator Chris Murphy over Alaska summit criticism

US President Donald Trump has sharply rebuked Democratic Senator Chris Murphy after the latter criticised Trump’s Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the meeting a “disaster” and an “embarrassment” for the United States.

In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump branded Murphy “very unattractive (both inside and out)” and a “lightweight,” accusing him of making peace harder to achieve. “Murphy is a lightweight who thinks it made the Russian President look good in coming to America. Actually, it was very hard for President Putin to do so. This war can be ended NOW, but stupid people like Chris Murphy, John Bolton, and others, make it much harder,” Trump wrote.

Murphy, speaking on NBC News, argued that Putin got “everything he wanted” from the summit, including global legitimacy and absolution for war crimes by being hosted in the US. He insisted that the meeting served as propaganda for Moscow.

Trump and Putin met for three hours at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre, joined by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other senior officials. While both leaders signaled progress on negotiations over Ukraine, no ceasefire was announced.

Following the summit, Trump briefed European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by phone. He reiterated his belief that the war could end quickly if Zelensky agreed to cede Crimea permanently to Russia and pledge that Ukraine would never join NATO — proposals European leaders fear would undermine Kyiv.

Trump insisted that “a lot of points were negotiated on behalf of Ukraine” and repeated his view that Zelensky “can end the war almost immediately” if he accepts the conditions.

European leaders, however, remain wary that Trump’s approach may pressure Ukraine into concessions that strengthen Moscow’s position.
