German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul begins two-day India visit, to hold talks with Jaishankar
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Bengaluru on Tuesday for a two-day official visit to India, signaling the growing depth of Indo-German ties. This is Wadephul’s first visit to India in his current role.
Ahead of his trip, Wadephul described India as a “key partner in the Indo-Pacific,” underlining the strength of political, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two democracies. “There is significant potential to expand our strategic partnership, from security cooperation to technology and innovation, as well as the recruitment of skilled workers,” he said.
Wadephul began his visit at the headquarters of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), underscoring Germany’s interest in advancing space collaboration with India. His itinerary also includes travel to New Delhi later in the day, where high-level meetings are scheduled for Wednesday.
In the capital, Wadephul is set to meet External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Talks are expected to cover a wide spectrum of issues, including trade and investment, digital transformation, green energy, global governance, and regional security.
Highlighting shared democratic values, Wadephul emphasized that like-minded nations such as India and Germany must work together to safeguard peace and stability. “India’s voice, as the world’s most populous country and largest democracy, is increasingly influential on global platforms,” he noted.
The visit builds on momentum from May 2025, when Dr. Jaishankar visited Berlin for comprehensive discussions with Wadephul on bilateral and global challenges. Both sides are expected to use this engagement to strengthen cooperation across critical areas, including climate action, sustainable growth, and defense partnerships.
