PM Modi, Singapore PM Lawrence Wong discuss trade, tech and strategic ties in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging bilateral talks with his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong at Hyderabad House on Thursday, focusing on deepening economic and strategic cooperation.

The discussions covered key sectors including finance, digital innovation, civil aviation, maritime security, space technology, and skill development, with several high-level agreements expected to be signed.

This marks Wong’s first official visit to India since assuming office. He is accompanied by his wife and a senior delegation of cabinet ministers and officials, underscoring Singapore’s commitment to strengthening ties with India.

Ahead of the talks, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Wong and expressed confidence that India-Singapore relations would reach new heights. “Confident that his talks later today with PM Narendra Modi will chart a roadmap for our contemporary ties,” Jaishankar posted on X.

Wong, in turn, highlighted the “good progress” in bilateral cooperation while also discussing regional and global developments with Indian leaders. During his visit, he has already met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to explore new areas of collaboration.

The Singapore Prime Minister will also call on President Droupadi Murmu before concluding his visit.

The trip comes as India and Singapore celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations. In 2024, ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during PM Modi’s visit to Singapore, reflecting growing convergence in trade, technology, and regional security.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the visit will provide both leaders an opportunity to review the “robust and multifaceted cooperation” between the two countries and set the roadmap for future collaboration in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
