PM Modi congratulates Guyana President Irfaan Ali on election victory, vows to deepen India-Guyana ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated President Irfaan Ali on his victory in the recently concluded General and Regional elections in Guyana, expressing confidence that bilateral relations will continue to strengthen on the foundation of historic people-to-people ties.

Taking to his official X account on Saturday, PM Modi wrote: “Heartiest congratulations to President Irfaan Ali on the resounding success in General and Regional elections. I look forward to further strengthening the India-Guyana partnership anchored in strong and historical people-to-people ties.”

Responding to the message, President Ali said he was eager to work closely with Modi, his government, and the people of India to further enhance already cordial relations.

Historical and cultural connections

India and Guyana share a unique relationship rooted in history, with a significant portion of Guyana’s population tracing their ancestry to Indian indentured laborers brought during the colonial era. Today, Guyanese citizens of Indian origin maintain deep cultural and familial ties with India, strengthening the bond between the two nations.

Expanding bilateral cooperation

The partnership has expanded across trade, technology, agriculture, cultural exchange, and development projects. The Ministry of External Affairs notes that diplomatic ties began in 1965, upgraded to a full High Commission in Georgetown in 1968 after Guyana’s independence.

In July 2025, the Indian High Commission in Guyana hosted a roundtable on India-CARICOM cooperation focusing on climate change, agricultural research, and resource mapping. This initiative followed outcomes of the second India-CARICOM Summit held in Georgetown in November 2024, where PM Modi pledged support in areas such as innovation, technology, and trade.

Looking ahead

With President Ali securing another term, India and Guyana are expected to pursue closer engagement in trade, investment, technology, and climate resilience. PM Modi has consistently described Guyana as a key partner in India’s outreach to the Caribbean region and CARICOM member states.
