Russia warns of severe consequences if foreign troops are sent to Ukraine

The Kremlin on Wednesday warned that any deployment of foreign troops to Ukraine would trigger “serious consequences,” cautioning Western nations against what it called reckless decisions.

Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, quoted by state-run TASS, said some countries “either do not understand or do not want to understand the terrible consequences of such reckless actions.” His remarks followed plans by a “coalition of the willing” to position military contingents in Ukraine as part of future security arrangements.

French President Emmanuel Macron last week announced that 26 countries, mostly European, had pledged to contribute to a potential “reassurance force.” Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Macron said the force could assist Ukraine through land, sea, or air support—though not directly on the front line. The pledge emerged from a September 4 virtual meeting of the coalition, co-chaired by Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which drew nearly 30 nations.

Meanwhile, Moscow addressed rising tensions with NATO member Poland after reports of Russian drones entering Polish airspace. The Russian Defence Ministry said the UAVs involved had a maximum range of 700 km and insisted no Polish facilities were targeted. It expressed readiness for consultations with Warsaw to clarify the incident.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, however, condemned the drone episode as a “large-scale provocation,” adding that it marked the first time Russian drones were downed over NATO territory. He confirmed that all threatening UAVs were shot down, stressing there were no casualties and the situation was under control.

The developments highlight escalating risks surrounding Ukraine’s war and the growing involvement of Western allies, despite Moscow’s warnings of destabilizing consequences.
