Old Friends, new frictions Modi, Trump, and the tariff crossroads
By: Dr Avi Verma
The stage is set: From friendship to friction
For years, Indo-U.S. ties were described as a “natural alliance.” Shared democratic values, rising trade, and joint security concerns kept both nations close. But as we enter September 2025, the bond between New Delhi and Washington is being tested like never before. What began as camaraderie between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump has now turned into a tariff war, straining trust and shaking markets.
Trump’s tariffs: Shockwaves across India
Trump’s 50% tariffs on Indian imports remain the core flashpoint. Labor-heavy industries—gems, textiles, furniture—are struggling to survive. Economists predict export losses of $55–60 billion by 2026, and India’s GDP growth could fall by at least 0.5%. For small businesses, the tariffs aren’t just policy—they are existential threats.
Modi’s balancing act: Reform, resistance, and diplomacy
India has responded with a mix of reforms and strategic bargaining. New GST measures aim to boost domestic resilience, while selective tariff cuts on U.S. goods (like whiskey and Harley-Davidsons) signal New Delhi’s willingness to negotiate. Yet, Modi’s challenge is bigger than trade: how to protect India’s economic interests without appearing to bend under U.S. pressure.
Beyond tariffs: The shadow of BRICS
Looming over this trade battle is India’s growing tilt toward BRICS and its long-standing ties with Russia. Washington sees this as hedging, if not drifting away. For New Delhi, however, strategic autonomy is sacred. As BRICS expands its global footprint, the U.S. fears losing influence over a partner it needs in the Indo-Pacific to counter China.
The meeting everyone is watching
This week’s Modi–Trump meeting has become the most anticipated diplomatic encounter of the season. In public, the two leaders have exchanged smiles, handshakes, and warm words. Behind closed doors, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will the talks yield a phased tariff rollback, or collapse into another showdown, with both leaders retreating to domestic political theater?
Ego vs. opportunity
The personal chemistry between Modi and Trump has always been a defining factor in Indo-U.S. ties. But this time, the question is blunt: Can these leaders set aside ego for pragmatism? Or will their stubbornness prolong a crisis neither nation can afford?
Final word: A partnership on the line
The Indo-U.S. partnership is at a crossroads. It can either adapt to a shifting multipolar world, balancing trade, defense, and diplomacy—or it can fracture under the weight of tariffs and mistrust. As old friends find themselves in new friction, the world is watching closely.
At IndoUS Tribune, we believe this is more than a trade story. It is a defining moment for two democracies whose choices will shape not just bilateral ties, but the future of the global order itself.
