Britain formally recognizes State of Palestine, defying US stance

In a landmark decision, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that Britain has formally recognised the State of Palestine, affirming its support for Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution.

In a video message, Starmer condemned the “man-made humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” noting that tens of thousands have been killed, including civilians trying to collect food and water. “This death and destruction horrifies us all. It must end,” he said.

In a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Starmer stressed that “a two-state solution remains the only pathway to a just and lasting peace,” while praising Palestinian reform commitments as vital to building state institutions.

The recognition follows months of mounting domestic and international pressure over Israel’s escalating war in Gaza. According to Gaza health authorities, over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, 2023. Israel has vowed a major offensive to “conquer” Gaza City, intensifying calls for global intervention.

The UK Foreign Ministry emphasised that recognition must be paired with concrete steps. “Recognition is not enough on its own. We are also building consensus around our Framework for Peace, from ceasefire to a permanent end to the conflict,” it said. London urged Israel to halt its Gaza offensive, allow humanitarian aid, and stop settlement expansion in the West Bank.

The move puts Britain at odds with the United States. During his recent UK visit, President Donald Trump reiterated his opposition to Palestinian statehood, saying, “I have a disagreement with the prime minister on that score.”

Analysts, including The Guardian, noted the strain in the “special relationship,” suggesting Washington remains unmoved despite declining US public support for the war.

On the same day, Canada, Australia, and Portugal also joined the growing list of nations recognising Palestine.
