Palestine hails recognition by Canada, Australia and UK as step toward two-state solution
Palestine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the coordinated recognition of the State of Palestine by Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, calling the move consistent with international law and UN resolutions.
In statements issued Sunday, leaders of the three countries formally announced recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state, underscoring their support for a two-state solution.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized that recognition aligns with Australia’s long-held commitment to peace, while also urging democratic reforms within the Palestinian Authority and excluding Hamas from governance.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the decision aims to “revive the hope of peace” for both Palestinians and Israelis. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly criticized Israel’s settlement expansion and military actions in Gaza, saying Canada’s recognition was rooted in international law and human rights.
Palestine’s UN Mission described the recognition as a “courageous decision” that advances the legitimate aspirations of its people and strengthens momentum toward lasting peace in the region.
