Mexico condemns US immigration raids after deaths of two nationals

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has sharply criticized recent U.S. immigration raids, condemning the deaths of two Mexican nationals during Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. Mexico has issued a diplomatic note to Washington demanding a full investigation and accountability for possible human rights violations.

“Yesterday, a diplomatic note was sent on this case, requesting that all investigations be carried out, and if anyone is responsible for human rights violations, that they be punished,” Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference.

The two Mexicans—Ismael Ayala-Uribe and Silverio Villegas Gonzalez—died following ICE raids and detention, according to reports. Sheinbaum denounced the criminalization of migrants in the United States, stressing that her government has launched initiatives to support Mexican nationals abroad, including an emergency hotline and expanded legal and technical assistance services.

She argued that U.S. immigration crackdowns harm not only migrants but also the American economy, noting that agricultural and service sectors are already struggling to fill jobs. “We oppose such treatment and the raids that have been carried out, which, in addition, cause fear and anxiety,” she said.

Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexicans in the U.S.—whether first, second, or later generations—make vital contributions to both the U.S. economy and Mexico’s through remittances.

Earlier this month, she had labeled the raids “unjust” and emphasized Mexico’s protocols for aiding affected citizens, including alerts to consulates who contact U.S. officials immediately after such incidents.

Mexico’s government confirmed that at least 26 Mexican nationals were detained during the recent ICE operations in Georgia. Sheinbaum renewed her call for comprehensive U.S. immigration reform, urging recognition of migrants’ contributions and protection of their rights.
