US Embassy assures passport, visa services to continue amid government shutdown
The US Embassy in India has reassured applicants that passport and visa services will continue despite the ongoing government shutdown in Washington.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Embassy said, “At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits. We will not update this account until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information.” The Embassy advised applicants to check travel.state.gov for updates.
The reassurance comes as the US government entered its first shutdown in seven years after lawmakers failed to agree on a funding bill. Democrats blocked Republican attempts to push through a stopgap measure in the Senate, while negotiations with President Donald Trump on Monday ended without a breakthrough.
On Tuesday, Trump continued to criticize Democrats, accusing them of refusing to compromise. He also warned that prolonged shutdowns could lead to layoffs of federal workers. Democrats, meanwhile, have demanded reversal of healthcare cuts in the “Big Beautiful Bill,” passed earlier this year, while Republicans have pushed for temporary funding until November 21.
The standoff leaves the Republican majority short of the 60 Senate votes needed to pass the measure. The last US government shutdown under Trump’s first term lasted 35 days, the longest in American history.
While essential services such as border security, air traffic control, and law enforcement will remain operational, several non-essential services, including national parks, food inspections, and government-funded preschool programs, are expected to face disruptions.
