The Gates Foundation, in partnership with the Consulate General of India in Seattle, hosted a vibrant celebration of Indian culture, arts, and cuisine on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The event was attended by Bill Gates, Chair and Board Member of the Gates Foundation, alongside senior leadership from Washington State and the City of Seattle.
Addressing the gathering, Gates said, “It is fitting that we come together on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. The ideals he championed—the equality and dignity of every person—are foundational to the work we do. Today, India is a global leader in innovation, pioneering solutions with the potential to save and improve millions of lives across the Global South. We look forward to continuing our partnership with India on its journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047.”
The program featured a special address on the “Relevance of Gandhian Values in the Contemporary World Order” by Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, and a specially curated dance performance, “Natyam – A Dance Mosaic of Bharat,” showcasing India’s regional diversity.
Earlier in the day, commemorative events were held at the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi near Bellevue Public Library and at Seattle Center, where floral tributes were offered by Washington State Senator Vandana Slatter in the presence of Eddie Rye, Chairman and Founder of the MLK–Gandhi Foundation. Young school children performed Gandhi Ji’s favorite hymns, and a cross-section of the Indian-American community participated in the celebrations.
The events highlighted Gandhi’s enduring legacy and celebrated India’s cultural richness while fostering dialogue on innovation, peace, and social responsibility.
