Trump receives warm welcome in Israel as Hamas begins releasing hostages
US President Donald Trump received a warm welcome in Israel on Monday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog greeted him upon arrival at Ben-Gurion International Airport. The leaders’ spouses, Sara Netanyahu and Michal Herzog, were also present.
Trump, who brokered the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, is set to address the Israeli Knesset later in the day before traveling to Egypt for a regional peace summit on Gaza. The summit, co-chaired by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, will include world leaders such as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Ahead of his arrival, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that the “war is over,” referring to the end of the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. “Everybody’s cheering at one time. That’s never happened before,” he said, calling it a “very special time.”
The ceasefire, built around a 20-point peace plan spearheaded by Trump, was mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, with involvement from Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Under the agreement, Hamas began releasing the remaining hostages while Israel agreed to free Palestinian prisoners.
The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. The new accord includes the handover of 20 deceased hostages’ bodies and calls for Hamas to disarm in the next phase.
India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is attending the summit on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
