The City of Appleton came alive with the glow and spirit of Diwali as it officially celebrated the Festival of Lights in collaboration with the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation (GIDF). Mayor Jake Woodford read the official proclamation, declaring October 23 as “Diwali Awareness Day”, marking a historic recognition of the city’s vibrant Indian American community.
The event at Appleton City Hall opened with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolizing wisdom, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness. Mayor Woodford said, “Diwali reminds us of the universal values of light over darkness and good over evil. This celebration honors the Indian American community whose contributions enrich the social, cultural, and economic life of Appleton.”
GIDF leaders Rakesh Malhotra (President), Abhinav Raina (General Secretary), and Chetan Natoria (Director of Community Affairs) joined city officials in the ceremony, alongside Anindita “Andy” Anaam, Director of Communications in the Mayor’s Office. Malhotra expressed gratitude, saying, “We thank the people of Appleton and Mayor Woodford for proclaiming Diwali Awareness Day. This gesture highlights the shared values that unite all communities — light, hope, and harmony.”
As diyas illuminated the hall, attendees celebrated not just a festival but the growing spirit of cultural solidarity, reflecting Appleton’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and recognition of traditions that strengthen community bonds.
