Piyush Goyal to visit Brussels as India–EU trade talks enter crucial phase

As the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations reach a decisive stage, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to Brussels, Belgium, on October 27–28, to hold high-level discussions with Maros Sefcovic, Executive Vice-President and European Commissioner for Trade, the government announced on Sunday.

The visit aims to provide strategic direction and political impetus to ongoing discussions, which have intensified in recent months. Both sides are working toward concluding a comprehensive, balanced, and mutually beneficial trade agreement, reflecting India’s growing engagement with the European Union — one of its largest trading partners.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, deliberations will focus on market access, non-tariff measures, regulatory cooperation, and mechanisms to strengthen resilient supply chains and sustainable growth. The visit will also assess the progress made during the 14th round of negotiations held earlier this month and identify areas needing further convergence.

Goyal’s Brussels schedule includes a bilateral meeting and a working dinner with Commissioner Sefcovic, where both leaders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to advancing a future-ready trade and economic partnership.

The visit follows the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier this year, during which both leaders emphasized the need for a rules-based global trading system that fosters prosperity and innovation.

India–EU trade ties have gained strategic momentum, with the FTA expected to unlock new opportunities in digital trade, renewable energy, and sustainable technologies, marking a major milestone in bilateral economic cooperation.
