PM Modi inaugurates Kalachakra ‘Wheel of Time’ in Bhutan in presence of King Jigme Khesar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the second day of his visit to Bhutan, inaugurated the sacred Kalachakra ‘Wheel of Time’, marking the beginning of the Kalachakra Empowerment ceremony as part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival in Thimphu.
The ceremony, held at a grand gathering of monks, devotees, and dignitaries, was attended by His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, and presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s Chief Abbot, adding spiritual depth and cultural significance to the event.
Sharing moments from the inauguration on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi wrote, “Had the honour of inaugurating Kālacakra ‘Wheel of Time’ Empowerment with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, and His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo. It was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo which made it even more special.”
He further added, “This is an important ritual with great cultural significance for Buddhists around the world. The Kālacakra Empowerment is part of the Global Peace Prayer Festival, which has brought together devotees and scholars of Buddhism to Bhutan.”
The Kalachakra, meaning “Wheel of Time,” is one of the most sacred teachings in Tibetan Buddhism, symbolizing harmony, balance, and universal peace. The ritual is rarely performed and is considered an advanced and profound practice representing the unity of cosmic and human existence.
A day earlier, PM Modi joined the Bhutanese monarch at Thimphu’s Tashichhodzong to seek blessings from the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha, which were sent from India for exposition as a special gesture marking the Fourth King’s 70th birth anniversary and the Global Peace Prayer Festival.
The relics, enshrined at the Grand Kuenrey Hall, symbolize the shared spiritual and cultural heritage between India and Bhutan. The Prime Minister also took part in celebrations honoring the Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s milestone, reaffirming India’s enduring friendship with the Himalayan kingdom.
PM Modi’s participation in the sacred Kalachakra ceremony reflects India’s deep-rooted cultural and spiritual ties with Bhutan, emphasizing the values of peace, compassion, and mutual respect that continue to guide relations between the two nations.
