India, Canada hold trade talks to deepen economic partnership and boost investments
India and Canada have reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties as Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Canada’s Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu co-chaired the 7th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) held in New Delhi on Thursday.
The high-level discussions focused on identifying new areas of economic cooperation, promoting mutual investments, and deepening collaboration across emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, clean technology, and digital industries.
“It was a pleasure to co-chair the 7th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment as part of the New Roadmap 2025 along with Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade,” Goyal said in a post on X. “We discussed avenues to strengthen bilateral trade, promote investments, and deepen cooperation between our countries.”
Sidhu, who is visiting India to explore new opportunities to advance trade and investment linkages, underscored Canada’s goal of expanding commercial relations with India under its Indo-Pacific Strategy.
“This visit to India will reinforce Canada’s commitment to diversifying our trade relationships and attracting new investment,” Sidhu said in an official statement. “As one of the fastest-growing major economies, India offers significant opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers. Our commercial ties continue to expand — bilateral trade surpassed $30 billion in 2024 — and there is even greater potential ahead.”
India was Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner in 2024, with two-way trade valued at $30.9 billion. The two ministers expressed optimism that the New Roadmap 2025 will guide both nations toward deeper economic integration and mutual prosperity.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand also met on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara, where they discussed strengthening cooperation in trade, energy, and security.
Jaishankar praised the progress achieved under the New Roadmap 2025 and reiterated India’s commitment to rebuilding a strong and forward-looking partnership with Canada.
