EAM Jaishankar meets Indian envoys in New York, reviews India–US cooperation and diaspora engagement

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar chaired a high-level conference of Indian Consul Generals in New York on Friday, bringing together senior diplomats from across the United States to assess the progress of India–US relations and review outreach to the Indian diaspora. The meeting included representatives from the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Consulates in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, underscoring the breadth of India’s diplomatic footprint in the U.S.

In a post on X following the meeting, Jaishankar wrote, “Chaired a Consul Generals Conference in New York today… Reviewed our bilateral ties and support for diaspora activities. Appreciate the commitment and efforts of our Embassy & Consulates to strengthening the India-US partnership.” The session was also attended by India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra.

The conference took place amid a period of steady diplomatic engagement for Jaishankar, who arrived in New York after a visit to Canada, where he participated in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. On Wednesday, he met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G7 discussions. In a post on X, Jaishankar said they discussed India–US trade, supply chain resilience, and shared strategic concerns involving the Ukraine conflict, Middle East developments, and Indo-Pacific stability. He also thanked Rubio for his condolences following the recent blast in Delhi.

On Thursday, Jaishankar held a comprehensive meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters. He said he valued Guterres’ insights on the evolving global order, multilateralism, and various regional hotspots. Their conversation touched on several ongoing international crises, further reinforcing India’s role in shaping global diplomatic priorities.

Jaishankar’s series of consultations come as India and the United States move closer to finalizing a long-anticipated trade agreement. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump said the two nations were “very close” to concluding a “fair trade deal,” signaling renewed momentum in economic cooperation.

The foreign minister’s interactions in New York highlighted the importance of coordinated diplomatic efforts, strong diaspora engagement, and sustained political dialogue as India and the U.S. continue to expand their strategic partnership.
