US aviation agency warns of ‘military activities’ over Latin America
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued safety advisories urging airlines to exercise caution while operating over parts of Mexico and several regions in Latin America, citing potential risks linked to ongoing “military activities.”
According to the FAA, flight advisory notices have been issued for specified areas covering Mexico, Central America, Panama, and parts of Colombia and Ecuador, as well as airspace over the eastern Pacific Ocean. The advisories, effective for 60 days starting Friday, apply to multiple oceanic and regional flight information zones.
The agency warned that possible disruptions to global navigation satellite systems could occur, creating conditions that may pose safety risks to aircraft. Such disruptions could affect navigation accuracy and situational awareness for pilots operating at various altitudes.
The FAA described the situation as “potentially hazardous,” highlighting regions over parts of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortes. Airlines and flight crews have been advised to maintain heightened vigilance and review operational risk assessments when planning routes through the affected areas.
Responding to the advisory, Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport clarified that the FAA notice is preventive in nature and does not impose restrictions on Mexican civil aviation. The ministry said the alert does not affect flight operations, airspace access, or airline schedules within Mexico.
“There are no operational implications or restrictions for Mexico, nor for Mexican airlines or operators,” the ministry said, emphasizing that aviation activity continues to function normally.
The FAA advisories were issued amid heightened regional tensions following a US military operation earlier this month that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. While the FAA did not directly link the advisory to specific military actions, it noted that increased military activity can raise risks for civilian aviation, particularly related to navigation systems and airspace coordination.
The FAA regularly issues such advisories to ensure airlines are informed of evolving security and operational conditions that could affect flight safety. The current notice does not prohibit flights but urges operators to exercise additional caution while transiting the identified regions.
