PM Modi reaffirms India’s commitment to remain Seychelles’ reliable partner

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reaffirmed India’s commitment to remain a reliable and long-term partner in Seychelles’ national development, as visiting President Patrick Herminie acknowledged New Delhi’s consistent support for the island nation’s growth and security priorities.

During wide-ranging talks in New Delhi, the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and agreed to deepen cooperation in digital governance. India committed to supporting Seychelles in building Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), including digital payments, tailored to its requirements.

Under the newly adopted Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth and Security through Enhanced Linkages (SESEL), both sides pledged to strengthen collaboration in sustainability, maritime security, defence, capacity building, resilience, and inclusive development.

India announced a Special Economic Package of USD 175 million for Seychelles, comprising a USD 125 million rupee-denominated Line of Credit and a USD 50 million grant for development projects, civilian and defence capacity building, and maritime security initiatives.

President Herminie thanked PM Modi for donating 10 ambulances to Seychelles. The two sides also agreed that recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia by Seychelles would ease procurement of quality medicines and improve access to affordable drugs under India’s Jan Aushadhi initiative.

The leaders agreed to expand cooperation in healthcare, including mental health training, exchange programmes, and deployment of Indian medical specialists, nurses, and technicians. They also committed to working together on constructing a new hospital in Seychelles.

On climate and energy, both sides reaffirmed their partnership in renewable energy and climate resilience. Herminie highlighted the success of solar projects implemented with India’s support under the International Solar Alliance, particularly benefiting agriculture and healthcare.

India also agreed to provide technical assistance for grid management and support Seychelles’ transition to green public transport. The two leaders further committed to implementing a Multi-Hazard Early Warning System and exploring new projects in energy conservation, clean mobility, and sustainability.
