Trump would back Israeli strikes on Iran missile program if talks fail: report

US President Donald Trump has indicated he would support potential Israeli strikes on Iran’s ballistic missile program if diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran collapse, according to US media reports.

CBS News, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Trump made the remarks during a December meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. The report said US military and intelligence officials have discussed possible forms of support for Israel in the event of military action, including aerial refueling assistance and help securing overflight permissions from regional countries.

However, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have publicly stated they would not allow their airspace to be used for attacks against Iran or for Iran to launch strikes on other nations.

The developments come as diplomatic efforts continue. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking during a visit to Slovakia, said he favors resolving tensions with Iran through diplomacy rather than military action.

A second round of US–Iran nuclear talks is scheduled for Tuesday in Geneva, following an initial meeting in Muscat, Oman, on February 6 that both sides described as a constructive start but without major breakthroughs. US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to represent Washington in the upcoming discussions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi is leading Tehran’s delegation to Geneva and is also scheduled to meet Swiss and Omani counterparts, along with International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi.
