
Modi and Dutch PM Schoof discuss harnessing AI for social transformation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Netherlands Prime Minister Dick Schoof on Thursday emphasised deeper collaboration in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive social transformation and inclusive growth.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, which saw participation from a high-level Dutch delegation led by Schoof. Following the meeting, PM Modi highlighted the Netherlands’ advancements in digital technologies and AI, stating that both countries would expand cooperation in emerging sectors.
The leaders discussed strengthening partnerships in semiconductors, quantum technologies, mega water management projects, green hydrogen, talent mobility, counterterrorism, and defence. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, both sides acknowledged that AI represents a pivotal moment in technological evolution and offers transformative opportunities for society.
Prime Minister Modi thanked the Netherlands for its role as Co-Chair of the Working Group on AI for Economic Growth and Social Good at the Summit. Schoof expressed confidence that the Summit Declaration would help shape future global AI policy frameworks.
Reviewing bilateral ties, the leaders welcomed steady progress in the India–Netherlands partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to expand collaboration across Water, Agriculture, and Health (WAH), clean energy, renewable technologies, education, and people-to-people exchanges. They also noted that progress in negotiations on the India–EU Free Trade Agreement could unlock new economic opportunities for both nations.
On global issues, Modi reiterated India’s consistent position on the Ukraine conflict, calling for an early cessation of hostilities. Both leaders also underscored the need for stronger multilateral cooperation to address global challenges and combat terrorism.
India and the Netherlands share a robust partnership rooted in democratic values and multi-sectoral engagement. Their Strategic Partnership on Water continues to facilitate cooperation in flood management and clean water technologies. In recent years, the relationship has expanded into high-technology domains, including innovation, maritime security, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.
The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to leveraging technology and strategic cooperation to promote sustainable development and long-term economic resilience.
