US issues ‘Depart Now’ advisory for Americans across Middle East

The US Department of State has issued an urgent security advisory directing American citizens to “DEPART NOW” from more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries amid escalating regional tensions following US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

The advisory, released on March 2, 2026, warns of rapidly deteriorating security conditions, potential retaliatory attacks, airspace disruptions, and limited evacuation options. The alert applies to Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel — including the West Bank and Gaza — Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Officials cited increased threats to US personnel and interests across the region. In Jordan, non-essential US personnel have departed facilities including the US Embassy in Amman due to heightened security concerns. Similar precautionary measures are under review in other diplomatic posts.

The State Department urged Americans in affected countries to use commercial means to leave while airspace remains open and to avoid waiting for government-assisted evacuations. Travelers were advised to monitor local media, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and maintain contingency plans for extended shelter-in-place scenarios.

The warning follows a sharp escalation in hostilities after coordinated US-Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure. Iran has since launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks, increasing fears of a broader regional conflict.

Air travel disruptions, missile interceptions, and temporary airspace closures have complicated movement across the Gulf and Levant. Security analysts say the advisory reflects concerns over potential attacks on US-linked facilities, energy infrastructure, and transportation hubs.

The State Department emphasized that the situation remains fluid and could worsen without notice. Americans unable to depart were advised to prepare emergency supplies, ensure valid travel documents, and remain in secure locations.

The advisory marks one of the most sweeping regional travel warnings in recent years, underscoring the volatility of the current Middle East crisis.
