Trump, Modi discuss Strait of Hormuz amid rising Middle East tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, with both leaders underscoring the critical importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.

The conversation comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, where any disruption to the strategic maritime corridor could have far-reaching consequences for global oil supplies and energy markets.

Confirming the call, U.S. Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor said the two leaders discussed the ongoing crisis and emphasized maintaining uninterrupted access through the Strait. In a post on X, he described the exchange as focused on ensuring stability in one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.

Prime Minister Modi also shared details of the conversation, stating that India supports immediate de-escalation and restoration of peace in West Asia. He stressed that ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains “open, secure, and accessible” is essential not just for regional stability but for the global economy.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most vital chokepoints in international trade, with a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments passing through it daily. Any blockade or disruption could trigger sharp spikes in energy prices and destabilize global markets.

The leaders agreed to remain in close contact as the situation develops, signaling a coordinated approach toward maintaining peace and stability.

The call also comes amid escalating tensions involving Israel and Iran, along with concerns among Gulf nations about potential spillover effects. Reports of drone attacks, military mobilization, and possible new alliances have further intensified fears of a broader regional conflict.

Global markets are closely monitoring developments, particularly as oil prices have shown volatility in response to shifting geopolitical signals. Analysts warn that prolonged instability in the region could lead to a major energy crisis.

Against this backdrop, the Trump-Modi conversation highlights the growing urgency among world leaders to prevent further escalation and safeguard critical global supply routes.
