Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. Bhadreshdas Swami of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha has been awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award 2025 by the Government of India for his Sanskrit work ‘Prasthanachatushtaye Brahmaghosha’, marking a significant recognition of contemporary Sanskrit scholarship and Hindu philosophy.
The work has been selected as the finest Sanskrit literary contribution of the year for its comprehensive exposition of the Brahma principle based on the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Brahma Sutras and the Vachanamrut of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Written in a sutra-based poetic form, the text is regarded by scholars as philosophical poetry combining literary refinement with deep metaphysical insight.
Composed under the guidance of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the work was published in 2018 and reflects the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan tradition. The Sahitya Akademi selection committee praised its originality, philosophical depth and literary excellence.
Dr. Bhadreshdas Swami, who heads the BAPS Swaminarayan Research Institute, is an internationally renowned Sanskrit scholar with multiple academic distinctions including M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt., and an honorary D.Sc. from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He is also the author of ‘Swaminarayana Siddhanta Sudha’ and the five-volume ‘Swaminarayan Bhashyam’ on the Prasthanatrayi.
Over the years, he has received several honors including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, the Mahamahopadhyaya title from Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, and recognition from institutions in India and abroad.
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Bhadreshdas Swami dedicated the award to Bhagwan Swaminarayan and his gurus, Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj, stating that the recognition highlights the enduring relevance of Sanskrit and India’s philosophical heritage.
The Sahitya Akademi Award is one of India’s highest literary honors, presented annually to outstanding literary works across 24 languages.
