Iran calls US jet downing a ‘bitter defeat’ after second F-15 crew member rescued

Iran on Saturday described the downing of a U.S. F-15 fighter jet as a “bitter defeat” for Washington, even as American forces successfully rescued the second crew member following a high-risk operation.

The development marks a significant moment in the ongoing U.S.–Iran conflict, combining a tactical loss for the United States with a high-profile recovery mission that prevented any personnel from being captured.

According to U.S. officials cited by international media, the second crew member was recovered after an intensive search operation involving special forces, helicopters, and aerial surveillance. The rescue came more than 24 hours after the aircraft was brought down in Iranian territory.

Earlier reports had confirmed that one crew member had already been rescued, while the second remained missing, prompting a large-scale search in mountainous terrain.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, framed the incident as a strategic success, claiming their air defence systems successfully targeted the advanced U.S. fighter jet. State-linked media highlighted the strike as evidence of Iran’s growing capability to challenge American air operations.

Despite the loss of the aircraft, the U.S. has emphasized the success of the rescue mission, describing it as a critical achievement under hostile conditions. Officials stressed that ensuring the safe recovery of personnel remains a top operational priority.

The incident comes amid escalating military exchanges between the two countries, with increased air activity, missile strikes, and drone operations reported across the region. The conflict has also begun to impact neighboring countries, raising concerns about broader regional instability.

Analysts say the episode reflects a widening gap in narratives. While Iran is projecting strength through its ability to shoot down advanced aircraft, the United States is focusing on operational resilience and rapid response capabilities.

The downing of the F-15 — combined with the successful rescue of both crew members — underscores the intensity of the conflict and the high risks involved in ongoing operations.

With tensions continuing to rise, such incidents are likely to play a key role in shaping both military strategy and global perception of the conflict.
