India and France deepen strategic ties at foreign office consultations in Paris
Vikram Misri co-chaired the India–France Foreign Office Consultations in Paris with Martin Briens, signaling a continued push to expand bilateral cooperation across key strategic sectors.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions covered a wide spectrum of areas including defence, civil nuclear energy, space collaboration, cyber and digital partnerships, artificial intelligence, and innovation. Both sides also emphasized strengthening people-to-people and cultural ties amid evolving global and regional challenges.
During his visit, Misri also met Jean-Noël Barrot, where the leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on pressing international issues, particularly the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The talks come at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty following stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Both India and France underlined the importance of adhering to the ceasefire framework and working towards a durable diplomatic resolution to the conflict. They also discussed restoring freedom of navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key concern for global trade and energy security.
The consultations further highlighted coordination between India and France within multilateral frameworks, including collaboration linked to the G7 presidency. Officials explored joint responses to global macroeconomic imbalances and stressed the need for more inclusive and effective multilateralism.
Beyond strategic dialogue, the visit also featured cultural engagement. Misri visited the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Paris, where he attended an exhibition showcasing contemporary Indian art. The exhibition reflected India’s vibrant artistic traditions and cultural outreach abroad.
Following his engagements in France, Misri is scheduled to visit Germany for similar consultations with senior German officials, continuing India’s diplomatic outreach across Europe.
The visit follows recent high-level exchanges, including trips to India by Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz earlier this year. These engagements underscore the growing depth of India’s partnerships with key European nations.
As global dynamics continue to shift, the India–France consultations reaffirm a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation across defence, technology, economy, and culture—positioning the partnership as a cornerstone of India’s engagement with Europe.
