The Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party Chicago Chapter commemorated the 47th Foundation Day of the Bharatiya Janata Party with a well-attended community event that blended cultural expression, political reflection, and civic dialogue.

Marking the party’s Sthapna Diwas on April 6, 1980, the gathering brought together members of the Indian diaspora to celebrate India’s democratic journey while emphasizing active civic participation in the United States.

The program opened with the national anthems of both countries, followed by a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and a Vedic invocation for peace and prosperity. A cultural segment featured young performer Vardaan Tiwari presenting ‘Vande Mataram’ on the saxophone, while Yashswini Desai delivered a vocal rendition that resonated with the audience.

The event also observed a moment of silence in memory of Balbir Punj, acknowledging his contributions to India’s public life.

Chicago Chapter Coordinator Amar Upadhyay welcomed attendees and thanked community members for their continued engagement. The keynote presentation by Rakesh Malhotra from the OFBJP USA Executive Committee highlighted the ideological foundations of the party, including Integral Humanism, Antyodaya, and ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.’ He also traced the party’s evolution from the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded by Syama Prasad Mukherjee in 1951, to its establishment in 1980 under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Media professionals, including Vandana Jhingan, Dr. Avi Verma, Jayanti Oza, and Prachi Jaitly, spoke about the importance of responsible journalism in shaping accurate narratives about India, particularly in the context of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision.

Community leaders engaged in a broader discussion on civic participation in the United States, emphasizing the diaspora’s role in contributing to local governance while advocating for stronger India–United States ties. Topics included trade partnerships, defense cooperation, and policy engagement with American institutions.

Speakers also referenced key policy developments under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the abrogation of Article 370, the Citizenship Amendment Act, the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and the abolition of triple talaq, highlighting their impact on India’s governance and socio-cultural framework.

A personal reflection by Hasmukh Patel, recalling early interactions with Prime Minister Modi, added a nostalgic touch to the evening. The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony honoring Amar Upadhyay for his contributions to the Chicago Chapter.

At the organizational level, OFBJP USA leadership under Adapa Prasad and Vasu Patel continues to strengthen diaspora engagement and promote India’s image in the United States. Coordination with the party’s global outreach is guided by Vijay Chauthaiwale and Ashwin Johar, ensuring alignment between the party’s vision and its international network.

The Chicago event reflected a broader effort to connect cultural identity with civic responsibility, as the diaspora reaffirmed its commitment to both India’s progress and active participation in American public life.
