Vaisakhi celebration brings culture, service and community spirit to Carmel

Carmel’s Gazebo at Civic Square was filled with vibrant colors, music, and community spirit as residents gathered to celebrate Vaisakhi, the traditional Sikh festival marking the spring harvest season.

Organized by Asawari Kaur, the celebration welcomed families and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds for an afternoon focused on unity, cultural appreciation, and community service. The event featured lively musical and dance performances, traditional festivities, and educational activities that showcased the richness of Indian heritage and Sikh traditions.

Designed as a family-friendly and multigenerational gathering, the program included attractions and activities for children, adults, and seniors. A community blood drive was also held during the event, reflecting the values of compassion, service, and giving that are closely associated with Vaisakhi.

Several distinguished guests and community leaders attended the celebration, including Mayor Sue Finkam, Dr. Anita Joshi, J.D. Ford, Victoria Garcia Wilburn, K.P. Singh, Anita Lerche, Sukhmanpreet Singh, Joel Thacker, Rich Taylor, Shannon Minnar, Rocky Singh, and Jeff Worrell. Sponsors supporting the event included 1st Source Bank, Key Bank, Rick Campbell, Smile N Style Dental, and Lindsay Gramlich. Their participation highlighted the region’s continued support for diversity, inclusion, and cultural engagement.

Adding to the excitement, the celebration featured special performances by well-known Punjabi entertainers who traveled from India to participate in the festivities. Attendees enjoyed energetic performances by renowned Punjabi anchor and performer Satti Satinder along with popular entertainers Satvinder Satti and Harmandeep Kaur. Their lively stage presence and performances created an enthusiastic atmosphere and kept the audience engaged throughout the event.

The celebration attracted a full house in the heart of Carmel, reflecting the growing popularity of Vaisakhi celebrations and the community’s increasing appreciation for Indian culture, music, and traditions.

Organizers noted that the event was not only an opportunity to celebrate Sikh heritage, but also a platform to strengthen intercultural understanding and bring communities together through shared experiences and service initiatives. With rising participation each year, organizers expressed hope of continuing and expanding the annual tradition in the future.
