India, Finland strengthen cooperation in AI, 6G, climate change and sustainable development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in Oslo, with both leaders agreeing to expand cooperation in futuristic technologies, sustainability and climate-focused initiatives.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the third India-Nordic Summit in Norway, where leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of strategic collaboration.

After the meeting, PM Modi described the discussions as an effort to give “new energy” to India-Finland relations. He noted that recent months have seen increased engagement between the two countries, including Prime Minister Orpo’s visit to India earlier this year for the AI Impact Summit.

The two leaders discussed cooperation in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, 6G technology, education, nuclear energy and digital innovation. They also focused on deepening collaboration in climate change, sustainable development and the circular economy.

A major outcome of the meeting was the announcement that India and Finland will jointly host the World Circular Economy Forum in September 2026 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The event is expected to bring together policymakers, businesses, researchers and sustainability experts from around the world.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders emphasized stronger partnerships between industries, research institutions and academic organizations to promote innovation-driven growth.

The discussions also reviewed ongoing cooperation in areas including trade and investment, 5G and 6G technologies, quantum technologies, renewable energy, space cooperation, mobility, sustainability and people-to-people ties.

Both sides welcomed the continued growth in bilateral trade despite global economic challenges and reaffirmed their shared goal of doubling trade between India and Finland by 2030.

Finland also acknowledged the growing contribution of Indian professionals in strengthening the country’s technology and innovation sectors.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that India and Finland share warm and multifaceted relations rooted in common democratic values. Finland continues to be viewed as an important partner for India within the European Union and the Nordic region.

The two leaders also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the India-European Union Strategic Partnership and stressed the importance of an early implementation of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
