23-year-old Tushar Kumar becomes youngest Indian-origin mayor in UK history
Tushar Kumar has created history by becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the United Kingdom at the age of 23 after being appointed Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood.
Originally from Haryana, Kumar officially assumed office during the council’s Mayor-Making Ceremony held at Fairway Hall in Borehamwood on May 13. The event was attended by councillors, civic leaders, residents, community representatives, family members and friends.
Kumar’s appointment has attracted significant attention across the Indian diaspora and British political circles due to his young age and rapid rise in local politics. He is now regarded as the youngest serving mayor in the UK and the youngest Indian-origin individual to hold such a position in British history.
Following the ceremony, Kumar shared his thoughts on social media, describing the achievement as an “incredible honour.”
“An incredible honour to officially become Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood and, at 23 years old, the youngest ever Indian-origin Mayor in UK history,” he wrote on X.
Reflecting on his political journey during his acceptance speech, Kumar said he was first elected as a councillor at the age of 20 while studying political science at King’s College London.
He emphasized the importance of young people becoming more actively involved in democracy, public service and community leadership. Kumar expressed hope that his journey would inspire more young individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate in local governance and civic affairs.
The new mayor also thanked outgoing Mayor Councillor Dan Ozarow for his mentorship and support during his tenure as deputy mayor. He congratulated Councillor Linda Smith on her appointment as Deputy Mayor and said he looked forward to working together in service of the local community.
Kumar additionally expressed gratitude to his family and friends for their constant encouragement throughout his political journey.
Outlining his priorities for the coming year, he said he intends to remain accessible and actively engaged with residents, businesses and community organisations across Elstree and Borehamwood.
“I want to be a mayor who is present for the community,” he said, adding that serving the town was “the privilege of a lifetime.”
His appointment reflects the growing participation of younger generations in British local government and highlights the increasing representation of the Indian-origin community in UK public life.
