U.S. President Donald Trump marked the 250th anniversary of American independence with a wide-ranging address at the National Mall, celebrating the nation’s history, military strength, economic achievements and future ambitions while calling for tighter election laws and reaffirming America’s global leadership.
Speaking after severe thunderstorms delayed the celebrations, Trump thanked thousands of supporters who returned despite the weather and described the anniversary as “one of the most joyous and glorious milestones” in American history. He praised the nation’s founders, saying the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution established the United States as a beacon of liberty and opportunity.
During the nearly 40-minute speech, Trump reflected on major milestones in American history, including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars, the Cold War and the Space Age. He honored veterans and Medal of Honor recipients, calling them symbols of American courage and sacrifice.
Military strength featured prominently in the address. Trump said recruitment across the armed forces had increased and asserted that the United States remained the world’s strongest military power. He also pointed to recent military operations as evidence of America’s resolve in protecting its national interests.
Turning to domestic issues, Trump urged Congress to pass stricter election laws requiring voter identification and proof of citizenship while limiting mail-in voting. He also denounced communism, declaring that America would never embrace the ideology.
The President highlighted U.S. leadership in science and space exploration, welcoming members of NASA’s Artemis II mission and reaffirming plans to return astronauts to the Moon before eventually sending missions to Mars.
Trump concluded by praising the country’s economic performance, citing strong markets, investment, job creation and manufacturing growth. Declaring that the United States was entering a new “golden age,” he expressed confidence that the nation would continue to lead the world in innovation, prosperity and freedom as it begins its next 250 years.
