A severe heat wave swept across the eastern United States on Independence Day, disrupting celebrations, straining power grids and prompting health officials to issue widespread warnings as millions marked the nation’s 250th anniversary.
According to the National Weather Service, nearly 160 million Americans were under major or extreme heat alerts as temperatures climbed to near-record levels across several states.
In Washington, D.C., soaring temperatures forced organizers to temporarily suspend activities at the National Mall, where thousands had gathered for America250 celebrations. Emergency medical teams responded to numerous cases of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion, before events were paused and later resumed in the evening. The annual Independence Day Parade scheduled for the following morning was also canceled because of the extreme weather.
New York City also experienced dangerous conditions, with the heat index reaching around 105 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius). City officials opened cooling centers, extended public swimming pool hours and urged residents to limit outdoor activities.
The National Weather Service warned that several locations could break daily and monthly temperature records, with some areas potentially recording all-time highs.
The scorching weather also affected major sporting events. FIFA implemented mandatory hydration breaks during World Cup matches as high temperatures impacted players and spectators. Matches in Miami and Philadelphia were played under intense heat, with officials closely monitoring conditions.
Meanwhile, soaring electricity demand from widespread air conditioning placed additional pressure on power grids across the Northeast. Utility provider Con Edison restored service to thousands of customers after heat-related outages, while regional grid operators remained on alert to prevent larger disruptions.
Despite the challenging conditions, many Americans continued participating in Independence Day events, determined to celebrate the country’s historic 250th anniversary while taking precautions against the dangerous heat.
