Massive crowds gathered in Tehran on Monday for the funeral procession of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with some mourners chanting anti-U.S. slogans and displaying banners calling for revenge against U.S. President Donald Trump.

State television showed tens of thousands of mourners lining central Tehran as trucks carrying the coffins of Khamenei and several family members moved through the capital. Water was sprayed over the crowds to help people cope with the summer heat.

According to Reuters, some demonstrators hurled stones at a billboard depicting Trump with a target over his head, while others burned U.S. and British flags. Several protesters carried placards reading “Kill Trump” and posters portraying Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu inside crosshairs alongside messages calling for vengeance.

The funeral is part of a week-long series of memorial ceremonies following Khamenei’s death in Israeli and U.S. airstrikes earlier this year. Authorities have organized large public gatherings across Iran before the body is taken to the holy cities of Qom and Iraqi Shiite shrines, eventually returning to Mashhad for burial.

On Sunday, three of Khamenei’s sons were seen praying beside his coffin. However, his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not appear publicly, fueling continued speculation about his condition following reports that he was injured during the conflict.

The funeral comes amid a fragile ceasefire reached last month after months of fighting between Iran, Israel, and the United States. While Iranian leaders have portrayed the outcome as a strategic victory, U.S. President Donald Trump has also claimed success, despite acknowledging that broader negotiations with Tehran have been postponed until after the funeral ceremonies conclude.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reiterated that Israel would target any future Iranian leader pursuing policies aimed at destroying Israel, underscoring that tensions remain high despite the current pause in hostilities.
