Some rare episodes hidden in Valmiki Ramayana: Who gave Lord Rama the divine weapons and why?

There were many reasons for Lord Rama’s incarnation on Earth. One of the most important purposes was the destruction of evil forces and the restoration of Dharma (righteousness).

Another significant reason, described in the Valmiki Ramayana, relates to the great penance performed by Sage Kashyapa and Mother Aditi. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Vishnu granted them a boon. The divine couple requested a son who would be like the Supreme Lord Himself.

The Lord lovingly replied:

“अब मैं अपने जैसा बेटा कहाँ से लाऊँ?
मैं स्वयं आपका पुत्र बनकर आऊँगा।
अगले जन्म में आप दशरथ और कौशल्या के रूप में आएंगे,
और मैं आपका पुत्र राम बनकर जन्म लूँगा।”

“Now where can I bring a son who is exactly like Me?
I Myself will take birth as your son.
In your next birth, you will be born as Dasharatha and Kaushalya,
and I will be born as your son, Rama.”

The divine promise was fulfilled, and Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Rama, the son of King Dasharatha and Mother Kaushalya of Ayodhya.

“कस्यप अदिति महातप कीन्हा,
तिन्ह कहूँ मैं पूरब बर दीन्हा।
ते दसरथ कौसल्या रूपा,
कोसलपुरी प्रगट नरभूपा।”

“Kashyap and Aditi performed great penance,
And I fulfilled the boon previously granted to them.
They were born as Dasharatha and Kaushalya,
And I appeared in the city of Kosala as their son.”

The second major reason for Lord Rama’s birth was to free the world from the burden of evil and injustice. Whenever oppression increases and righteousness declines, the Divine takes birth to restore balance.

The situation on Earth at that time was similar.

“अतिसय देखी धरम की ग्लानि,
परम सभीत धरा अकुलानी।
धेनु रूप धरि हृदय बिचारी,
गई तहाँ जहाँ सुर मुनि झारी।”

“Seeing the great decline of Dharma,
The Earth became deeply distressed and frightened.
Taking the form of a cow and reflecting upon her sorrow,
She went to the place where the gods and sages gathered.”

The same eternal principle is explained by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita:

“यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत।
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदाऽऽत्मानं सृजाम्यहम्॥”

“Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati Bharata,
Abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham.”

“Whenever there is a decline in righteousness and a rise in unrighteousness, O Bharata, I manifest Myself.”

Lord Rama also required special divine weapons to defeat powerful demons and protect Dharma. The question then arose: Who would provide him with these extraordinary weapons and teach him their use?

For this sacred responsibility, the great sage Vishwamitra appeared.

Sage Vishwamitra and the Training of Lord Rama

The Valmiki Ramayana, in the Bala Kanda, describes that when Lord Rama and his brothers reached youth, Sage Vishwamitra arrived at King Dasharatha’s court.

The sage requested that Rama and Lakshmana accompany him to protect his sacred rituals from demons who were disturbing his spiritual practices.

King Dasharatha was initially hesitant. He offered his army instead, but Sage Vishwamitra remained firm. He wanted only Rama and Lakshmana.

The sage knew the true purpose behind Rama’s birth. He understood that Rama would require divine knowledge and celestial weapons for the great mission ahead.

After consulting Sage Vashistha, King Dasharatha finally allowed Rama and Lakshmana to accompany Sage Vishwamitra.

The Slaying of Tataka and the Gift of Divine Weapons

While staying at Sage Vishwamitra’s hermitage, Rama and Lakshmana learned various skills and disciplines. One day, a terrifying demoness named Tataka arrived near the ashram.

Seeing her frightening appearance, Lord Rama said to Lakshmana:

“तां दृष्टा राघवः क्रूरां विकृतां विकृताननाम्।
लक्ष्मणं सोऽभ्यभाषत॥”

“Tam drishtva Raghavah kruram vikritam vikritananam,
Lakshmanam so’bhayabhashata.”

“Seeing this cruel and terrifying being with a distorted appearance,
Rama spoke to Lakshmana.”

Lord Rama observed that Tataka was a woman and wondered whether killing her would be appropriate. However, Sage Vishwamitra knew that she was a cruel and destructive force who had caused immense suffering.

Following his guru’s command, Rama confronted Tataka and defeated her.

“शरेणोरसि विव्याध सा पपात ममार च।
तां हतां भीमसंकाशां दृष्टा सुरपतिस्तदा॥”

“Sharenorasi vivyadha sa papata mamara cha,
Tam hatam bhimasankasham drishtva surapatistada.”

“Pierced by Rama’s arrow in her chest,
The terrifying Tataka fell and met her end.”

After Tataka’s destruction, Sage Vishwamitra realized that the time had arrived to grant Rama the divine weapons required for his future mission.

Sage Vishwamitra Gives Divine Weapons to Lord Rama

One morning, the great sage called Rama and spoke with affection:

“परितुष्टोऽस्मि भद्र ते राजपुत्र महायशः।
प्रीत्या परमया युक्तो ददाम्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः॥”

“Paritushto’smi bhadra te rajaputra mahayashah,
Pritya paramaya yukto dadamyastrani sarvashah.”

“O noble prince, I am extremely pleased with your valor.
With great affection, I grant you these divine weapons.”

Sage Vishwamitra presented Lord Rama with several celestial weapons and explained the methods to invoke and control them.

Among them were the divine sword Nandana, the Vayavya Astra, Hayashira Astra, Krauncha Astra, powerful Shakti weapons, and weapons known as Kankala, Musala, Kapala, and Kinkini.

“वायव्यं प्रथमं नाम ददामि च तवानघ।
अस्त्रं हयशिरो नाम क्रौञ्चमस्त्रं तथैव च॥”

“Vayavyam prathamam nama dadami cha tavanagha,
Astram Hayashiro nama Kraunchamastram tathaiva cha.”

“I grant you the Vayavya weapon, O sinless one,
Along with the Hayashira and Krauncha celestial weapons.”

He further bestowed powerful weapons including Tamas, Sauman, Samvarta, Durjaya, Musala, and Satya, along with divine weapons connected with the powers of the Sun, Moon, and Vishwakarma.

The Great Guru-Shishya Tradition

The following day, Sage Vishwamitra carefully explained the use, control, and significance of every weapon. He patiently answered all questions of Rama and Lakshmana and removed every doubt from their minds.

After receiving this divine knowledge, the two brothers expressed their gratitude:

“गृहीतास्त्रोऽस्मि भगवन् दुर्धर्षः सुरासुरैः।
अस्त्राणां त्वहमिच्छामि संहारं मुनिपुङ्गव॥”

“Grihitastrasmi Bhagavan durdharshah surasuraih,
Astranam tvaham icchami samharam munipungava.”

“O revered sage, by your grace we have received these powerful weapons.
We seek your guidance on their proper use and withdrawal.”

With humility, Rama and Lakshmana bowed before their guru and promised that these divine powers would always be used for the protection of Dharma and the welfare of humanity.

This episode is not merely a story about receiving celestial weapons. It represents the eternal values of the Guru-Shishya tradition, discipline, humility, and responsibility.

Sage Vishwamitra did not only give weapons to Lord Rama; he prepared him for the divine mission for which he had descended upon Earth—the victory of Dharma over Adharma.

Our respectful salutations to the great Guru Sage Vishwamitra and Maryada Purushottam Lord Rama.

Jai Shri Ram.
