The Indian American Cultural Association of Chicago and the Ray Graham Association came together in Burr Ridge, Illinois, for a warm and meaningful celebration of freedom, friendship and inclusion on July 1. The event marked three important milestones: the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, India’s 80th Independence Anniversary and 10 years of partnership between IACA and the Ray Graham Association.
The celebration brought together community members, volunteers, youth participants, civic leaders and individuals served by the Ray Graham Association for a morning filled with cultural pride, shared values and community spirit.
The program opened with the national anthems of the United States and India, symbolizing the enduring bond between the world’s two largest democracies. The ceremony continued with vibrant cultural performances by IACA youth members, whose energetic dance presentations showcased the richness of Indian heritage while adding color and enthusiasm to the occasion.
One of the most meaningful highlights of the celebration was the Joint Independence Day Parade, where IACA youth and Ray Graham Association participants marched together while proudly waving the American and Indian flags. The parade served as a powerful expression of unity, inclusion and mutual respect.
IACA President Vinita Gulabani shared that the event was attended by several distinguished community leaders and public officials, including Mayor Larry Herman, Sunil Shah, Meghna Bansal, Madhu Uppal, Sohan Joshi, Praful Rami and Prem Sharma. Their presence reflected the strong relationship between the Indian American community and the broader civic community in Illinois.
Following the formal program, attendees gathered for refreshments and fellowship during a festive reception. Guests also received commemorative IACA gifts, adding a thoughtful touch to the celebration.
Reflecting on the occasion, IACA leadership described the event as “a beautiful celebration of freedom, friendship and inclusion.” The organization emphasized that its long-standing partnership with the Ray Graham Association continues to create meaningful opportunities for cultural exchange, volunteerism and community service.
Gulabani also acknowledged the dedication of the many volunteers who helped make the event possible. She expressed appreciation to the IACA leadership team, including Shanu Sinha, Richa Pal, Kamlesh Kapoor, Radhika Garimella and IACA Vice President Raj Narayan, along with volunteers from both organizations. Special recognition was given to Neal Patel for his outstanding coordination and support in organizing the celebration.
The Indian American Cultural Association is dedicated to preserving and promoting Indian culture while building meaningful relationships through youth engagement, volunteerism and community outreach. The Ray Graham Association has served the greater Chicago area for decades by providing housing, employment, educational and community support services that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead fulfilling and independent lives.
As the United States and India prepare to celebrate historic national milestones, the event served as a reminder that freedom, friendship and inclusion are values best honored when communities come together.
