India declares one-day national mourning for former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad Al Thani
The Government of India has announced a one-day national mourning on Monday as a mark of respect for Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir and Father Emir of Qatar, who passed away at the age of 74.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the decision reflects India’s respect for the late Qatari leader, who played a significant role in transforming Qatar into one of the world’s leading economies during his tenure.
As part of the national mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across India on all government buildings where it is regularly displayed. The government also announced that there will be no official entertainment on the day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad, describing him as a visionary statesman whose leadership helped shape modern Qatar.
In a message shared on social media, Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir of Qatar. He was a visionary leader who guided Qatar to great levels of development and prosperity.”
The Prime Minister also recalled meeting Sheikh Hamad during his visit to Qatar in February 2024, describing him as “a true friend” who contributed to strengthening the longstanding ties between India and Qatar.
Sheikh Hamad served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, overseeing a period of rapid economic growth, infrastructure development and international engagement. Under his leadership, Qatar emerged as a major global energy exporter and expanded its diplomatic influence across the Middle East and beyond.
India and Qatar share close bilateral relations, with cooperation spanning energy, trade, investment, education and the welfare of the large Indian expatriate community living in the Gulf nation.
The announcement of national mourning underscores the importance India attaches to its relationship with Qatar and recognizes Sheikh Hamad’s enduring contribution to the country’s development and to India-Qatar friendship.
