Indian community bids farewell to Consul General Somnath Ghosh following Malaysia appointment
Members of the Indian-American community across the Midwest have begun hosting farewell gatherings for Consul General of India Somnath Ghosh following his appointment as India’s next High Commissioner to Malaysia. The Government of India announced his new diplomatic assignment on July 1. Although his appointment has been confirmed, the official date of his departure from Chicago has not yet been announced.
In recent weeks, several community organizations have organized appreciation and farewell events recognizing Ghosh’s tenure as Consul General in Chicago. The gatherings have brought together community leaders, elected officials, and representatives of cultural, business, educational, and nonprofit organizations from across the Midwest.
A career diplomat from the 1997 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Ghosh has served in a number of diplomatic assignments in Asia, Europe, North America, and South Asia. During his tenure in Chicago, he headed the Consulate General of India, which serves the Indian diaspora in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
As Consul General, Ghosh represented India at a wide range of official, cultural, business, educational, and community events throughout the Midwest. The Consulate organized and participated in annual celebrations of India’s Republic Day, Independence Day, and International Day of Yoga, while also facilitating trade, investment, academic exchanges, and consular outreach programs.
His tenure also saw continued engagement between the Consulate and Indian-American community organizations representing diverse regional, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. Among the notable initiatives during his tenure was the installation of a statue of Swami Vivekananda at the Consulate premises in Chicago, highlighting India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Community organizations hosting recent farewell events have acknowledged Ghosh’s outreach efforts and his participation in numerous local programs. Interestingly, while multiple farewell receptions have already taken place, his official departure date from Chicago has yet to be announced.
Ghosh is expected to assume his new responsibilities as High Commissioner of India to Malaysia after completing his tenure in Chicago. The Indian-American community now awaits the announcement of his successor, who will lead one of India’s busiest diplomatic missions in the United States.
