More than 100 teenagers from Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin gathered in Naperville for the Second Annual Kho Kho Chicago Premier League Championship, organized by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS). The event promoted physical fitness, teamwork, leadership, and cultural awareness through one of India’s oldest traditional sports.

Kho Kho, a fast-paced game that emphasizes speed, agility, strategy, and teamwork, has been played in India for generations. Through events like this, HSS is introducing the sport to a new generation of Indian-American youth while encouraging them to remain active and connected to their cultural heritage.

The tournament featured 10 teams competing in a series of spirited matches. Many participants first learned the game through local HSS Shakhas, which organize regular activities focused on physical fitness, character building, leadership development, and community service. Organizers said such programs provide young people with positive recreational opportunities while helping them build friendships and stay connected with Indian traditions and values.

One of the unique aspects of Kho Kho is its inclusiveness. Boys and girls compete together, and the game requires minimal equipment, making it easy to play in schools, parks, and neighborhoods. Organizers believe these qualities make it an ideal sport for encouraging teamwork and healthy lifestyles.

The championship has grown significantly since its inaugural edition, with participation increasing from about 60 players last year to more than 100 this year, reflecting growing interest in traditional Indian sports among youth in the Midwest.

After a day of competitive play, Team Prahalad, representing Aurora and Naperville, won the championship by defeating Team Ashva from Buffalo Grove in the final.

While the competition recognized athletic excellence, organizers emphasized that its primary goal was to bring young people together, strengthen community bonds, and provide a healthy alternative to excessive screen time. Community leaders noted that initiatives such as the Kho Kho Chicago Premier League not only preserve India’s sporting heritage but also help guide youth toward positive activities that foster discipline, teamwork, leadership, and a lifelong connection with their cultural roots.
