US Marine Corps officials have confirmed a mishap involving an F-35B fighter jet near Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego, California. The pilot ejected safely from the aircraft and was recovered before being transported to a medical facility, according to military officials.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. local time on Friday, July 31, near the major Marine Corps installation. A base spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying emergency personnel responded to the scene and that the pilot was recovered following the ejection.

The aircraft was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at MCAS Miramar. Officials have not yet disclosed details about the circumstances leading to the crash.

The cause of the mishap remains under investigation. Military authorities are expected to examine the aircraft, flight conditions and other factors as part of the safety investigation.

The F-35B Lightning II is the US Marine Corps’ variant of the F-35 family and is designed for short takeoffs and vertical landings. The aircraft plays a key role in Marine Corps aviation operations and is capable of operating from amphibious assault ships and austere airfields.

MCAS Miramar is a major US military installation and home to thousands of service members from across the US armed forces.

The latest incident follows several US military aviation mishaps reported in recent months. In June, a military fighter jet crashed near Rimrock Lake in Washington state, sparking a wildfire. The pilot ejected before the crash and sustained minor injuries.

In May, a T-38 Talon II training aircraft associated with Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi crashed in western Alabama. Both pilots ejected safely, and authorities launched an investigation into the incident.
