The Embassy of India in Washington, D.C. marked India’s 80th Independence Day with a flag-hoisting ceremony at India House on August 15, bringing together members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India.

Ambassador of India to the United States Shri Vinay Kwatra hoisted the National Flag during the ceremony. The program began with the rendition of the National Song and National Anthem, followed by the Ambassador’s reading of the address to the nation delivered by President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu on the eve of Independence Day.

The celebration also featured a cultural program involving children of the Indian diaspora. Dancers from Dhoom Studio presented a patriotic performance featuring a medley of Indian songs, while students of Notes n’ Beats Music School performed an orchestral rendition of Vande Mataram. The musical presentation also commemorated 150 years of Vande Mataram, one of India’s most significant patriotic compositions.

The Embassy also recognized young participants who excelled in two of its community outreach initiatives. Winners of the Viksit Bharat Painting Competition and the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz were felicitated during the Independence Day celebrations.

The program reflected the Embassy’s efforts to involve the younger generation of the Indian-American community in India’s national celebrations and cultural traditions. The participation of children and students also provided an opportunity to connect the diaspora’s younger generation with India’s history, heritage, and national identity.

The celebrations were held in observance of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ and ‘Surya Path Tiranga’ campaigns of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The Independence Day program at India House brought together national commemoration, cultural performances, and community participation, marking India’s 80 years of independence while highlighting the continuing connection between India and its diaspora in the United States.
