Chicago Indian American community celebrates India@80 with Operation Sindoor book launch and Vande Mataram tribute

The Indian American community in Chicagoland marked India’s 80th Independence Day with an evening of patriotism, cultural pride and remembrance at the International University of Vedic Wellness. Organized by the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation, the celebration also commemorated the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ and featured the United States launch of ‘Operation Sindoor: The Untold Story of India’s Deep Strikes Inside Pakistan’.

The highlight of the event was the participation of retired Lieutenant General K.J.S. “Tiny” Dhillon, a highly decorated Indian Army veteran and author of the book. Addressing the gathering, Dhillon spoke about the courage, leadership, sacrifice and national resolve associated with Operation Sindoor, while thanking the organizers for giving him an opportunity to share the story with the Indian American community.

The program began with the raising of the Indian flag, followed by the national anthems of India and the United States. Veterans of the Indian Armed Forces were honored, with Dhillon presenting medals recognizing their service and sacrifice.

GIDF President Rakesh Malhotra said Independence Day was an opportunity to reaffirm values of unity, service, democracy and cultural pride while strengthening ties between India and the United States.

Seniors from Universal Metro Aging Services presented a skit depicting Operation Sindoor, adding an intergenerational dimension to the celebration. The Chicago Nupur Dance Academy performed a classical rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’, highlighting the cultural significance of the patriotic composition.

Santosh Kumar, founder of the International University of Vedic Wellness, emphasized the importance of preserving India’s cultural and spiritual heritage and passing these values to younger generations.

The event was attended by Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India in Chicago, Deputy Consul General Kriti Thockchom, the Mayor of South Barrington and representatives of several Indian American organizations.

GIDF General Secretary Abhinav Raina said the celebration brought together history, culture, military service, national security and diaspora engagement under the theme “India@80.” Chetan Notaria, GIDF Director of Community Outreach, thanked the dignitaries, veterans, performers, volunteers and community members who contributed to the event.

The Global Indian Diaspora Foundation promotes cultural and civic engagement among Indians worldwide while encouraging collaboration in education, technology, trade and sustainability and strengthening India-United States relations.
