
Federation of Indian Associations Chicago celebrates India’s 80th and America’s 250th Independence anniversaries

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day and America’s 250th Independence anniversary with a vibrant community gathering attended by community leaders, sponsors and hundreds of families.
The celebration opened with the national anthems of India and the United States, followed by a welcome address from the FIA chairman. FIA President Richa Chand and Altaf Bhukhari highlighted the organization’s activities and contributions to the community.
A major attraction was a colorful fashion parade showcasing the traditional attire of different Indian states, presented by FIA members. The program also featured ‘Ek Sham Bharat Ke Naam’, with patriotic musical performances.
Chief Guest Dr. Darshan S. Dhaliwal and the Consul General of India emphasized the importance of freedom and the enduring ties between India and the United States. Several elected officials, including Mayor Frank, Mayor McLeod, Mayor Daley, State Senator Laura Murphy, Representative Mustman and future Congresswoman Melissa Bean, were honored.
Keynote speaker Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi praised Indian Americans for their achievements in medicine, business and education, describing them as one of the fastest-growing and most successful communities in the United States. “India’s greatest export is you,” he said.
The evening also featured an awards ceremony honoring FIA Banquet Chairman Ajit Singh, Co-Chair Murugesh Kasalingam and community leaders including Brij and Vijaya Sharma, Manish Gandhi, Dr. Parag Doshi, Syed Hussain, Yogi Bhardwaj and Radio Zindagi.
Cultural performances by Shirzar Dance Company, singer Shivani Kashyap and actor Kashish Rajput added to the festivities. The program was hosted by Jassi Parmar of Desi Junction and was warmly appreciated by the audience.
