Nana Patekar dies at 75, last rites to be held at Pune farmhouse

Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar died on Thursday, October 8, at the age of 75 following a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. His mortal remains are being taken to his farmhouse in Donje near Pune, where his last rites will be performed with full state honours.

Patekar was found unresponsive at his home in Dona Paula, Goa, in the early hours of Thursday after experiencing severe chest discomfort. He was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him, but he could not be saved. Hospital officials confirmed cardiac arrest, while a postmortem was also scheduled as part of the formal procedures.

His mortal remains are expected to reach Pune later Thursday before being taken to his Donje farmhouse for the final farewell. Reports said arrangements were being made for admirers and well-wishers to pay their last respects, while security and traffic arrangements were tightened around the area in anticipation of a large gathering.

The Maharashtra government has announced that Patekar will receive a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to Marathi and Hindi theatre and cinema. His final rites will be held at the farmhouse, a place with which the actor had a close personal connection.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, the actor built a career spanning nearly five decades across Hindi and Marathi cinema. He made his film debut in the 1978 movie “Gaman” and went on to earn acclaim for performances in films including “Parinda,” “Krantiveer” and “Salaam Bombay!”

Patekar was a recipient of three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri. Known for his intense screen presence, distinctive dialogue delivery and versatility, he worked across serious dramas, action films and comedies.

His death has prompted tributes from across the Indian film industry and political circles, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi among those mourning the loss of the acclaimed actor. Patekar is survived by his wife and son Malhar.
