Jon Ossoff wins re-election in Georgia, strengthens Democrats’ Senate position

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has won re-election in Georgia, defeating Republican Congressman Mike Collins in a closely watched contest and securing a second term in the US Senate. The victory is a significant boost for Democrats as they seek to challenge President Donald Trump’s administration during the final two years of his presidency.

At 39, Ossoff is the youngest member of the US Senate. He entered the 2026 election cycle as one of the Republicans’ top targets and was the only Democratic senator seeking re-election in a state that Trump won in the 2024 presidential election.

Ossoff built his campaign around strong criticism of Trump, repeatedly questioning the president’s economic policies, political conduct and influence over Republican lawmakers. His campaign also gained national attention for its fundraising success, bringing in more than $100 million.

During the campaign, Ossoff described Trump as a failed president and accused his administration of using political power for personal and financial gain. He also criticised Trump’s tariffs, tax policies and handling of the Iran conflict.

Republican candidate Mike Collins struggled to gain momentum despite receiving Trump’s endorsement. Ossoff repeatedly challenged Collins over his political positions, past social media posts and associations that drew criticism over alleged links to white nationalist figures. Collins rejected accusations of racism and antisemitism.

Ossoff also highlighted his work for Georgia residents, including federal support for hurricane recovery, infrastructure development and other local priorities. His campaign received endorsements from some local Republican officials, helping him appeal beyond the Democratic base in the traditionally conservative state.

First elected in 2020, Ossoff made history alongside fellow Democrat Raphael Warnock. Ossoff became Georgia’s first Jewish senator, while Warnock became the state’s first Black senator.

The two victories marked a turning point in Georgia politics, transforming the state into a major battleground in national elections.

During his second Senate campaign, Ossoff also addressed foreign policy, expressing support for Israel’s security while emphasising the importance of protecting Palestinian civilians. He called for ending the Iran war and questioned several aspects of the Trump administration’s international policies.

Ossoff’s re-election strengthens the Democratic Party’s position in the Senate and adds to its growing momentum in the 2026 midterm elections. His national profile has also fuelled speculation about a possible presidential campaign in 2028.

The victory represents another setback for Republicans and signals the growing political challenges facing Trump as Democrats prepare to exercise greater congressional oversight.
